02 Apr TENNIS STAR MONTHLY NOMINEE – MARCH
Tennis prodigy Jess McDonald is the first sports star nominee for the year.
McDonald won her nomination after being selected in the 16 person Victorian team to compete in the prestigious Pizzey Cup tournament to be held in Adelaide next month.
McDonald went through an extensive trial process to make the team, having to nominate before attending selection trials.
It was after the selection trials that she was notified of her selection.
McDonald together with her sister and previous sports star nominee Steffi, has been one of the leading junior players in the Wimmera for a number of years now.
McDonald was an emergency for the state team last year, as a bottom aged player, but with a solid year of tennis behind her, she has made it as a top age player for this year.
McDonald is following in the footsteps of her older sister who also made the state team as a top aged player, and now is playing in the American College system on a tennis scholarship. Jess would like to emulate Steffi and is working hard and doing everything she can to get a scholarship.
As the monthly winner McDonald will receive a $50 gift card from The Athlete’s Foot.
McDonald is the first nominee for this year’s awards. All nominees are in line to collect the Horsham Sports and Community Club Title of Wimmera Sports Star of the Year as well as the $1,000 Sports Star scholarship, at a gala dinner on February 14 next year and follow in the footsteps of previous winners including Sophie Martin, Maggie Caris, Jesse Iese, Darcy Tucker, Jannik Blair, Ken Bald, Alethea Sedgman and Mark O’Brien.
Nominations for the Horsham Sports and Community Club Sports Star of the Year Award close the last day of each month and can be made online at the WRSA website www.wrsa.org.au.
If you know of someone who is doing well at their sport and deserves some recognition, why not nominate them in the Sports Star of the Month. All nominees in the monthly award will be presented with specially made sports star certificates and the monthly winner receives a free ticket to the annual presentation and a specially struck medallion from Wimmera Trophies and Gifts.
