Karen Community Doing Sport Differently

15 Jul Karen Community Doing Sport Differently

The Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly has partnered with VicHealth and Regional Sport Victoria to showcase the incredible Karen Community Sport program.

The Karen Community Sport Program is a partnership between VicHealth, the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly, the Nhill Neighbourhood House and Learning Centre, and the local Karen people and aims to increase participation in volleyball and caneball, a traditional Karen sport, among all members of the community.

This was achieved by working with community members to understand the key barriers to participation and addressing them through implementing a program that was designed by the community.

VicHealth is a long-term partner of the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly, and this project is a great example of implementing the Doing Sport Differently principle 1 – “engage with the target market through the design process to reduce barriers and fulfil motivations.” You can find more about the Doing Sport Differently principles here.

“We want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome to be active in their community. VicHealth is excited to support the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly to provide more diverse and social activities in Nhill,” said VicHealth CEO Dr Sandro Demaio.
