GASCOYNE SPORTS STAR NOMINEE FOR MAY
Horsham Panthers rugby league club member Jayden Gascoyne is the May nominee for the Sports Star of the Year awards.
Gascoyne won his nomination for gaining selection in the SA state team to compete at National Championships in Adelaide over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
Gascoyne has been playing rugby league for four years, after coming through the Minyip Murtoa junior footy program and finding his niche in the fledgling sport.
Gascoyne was picked in the Mt Gambier League representative side, where he was identified to trial for the SA state team. He survived two selection trials where 36 players tried out, and was finally selected in the team of 20 to compete.
Gascoyne was the Horsham Panthers MVP in 2015 and will be hoping to impress enough at the Nationals to possibly gain All Australian selection in a team to play in Fiji later this year.
Gascoyne joins last year’s winner shooter Craig Kelly, athlete Jesse Iese, water skier Peter Smith and basketballer Jordie McAuliffe as the first four nominees for the annual awards with all in line to collect the Horsham Sports and Community Club Title of Wimmera Sports Star of the Year as well as the $1,000 Sports Star scholarship, at a gala dinner in February next year and follow in the footsteps of previous winners including Darcy Tucker, Jannik Blair, Ken Bald, Alethea Sedgman and Mark O’Brien.
Nominations for the Horsham Sports and Community Club Sports Star of the Year Award close the last day of each month and all monthly winners will receive an embroidered Sports Star of the Year jacket courtesy of DAGS Quality Screen Printing and voucher from Hip Pocket Workwear.
If you know of someone who is doing well at their sport and deserves some recognition, why not nominate them in the Sports Star of the Month. All nominees in the monthly award will be presented with certificates signed by the Minister for Sport and Recreation John Eren and the monthly winner receives (aside from the jacket and voucher), a free ticket to the annual presentation and a specially struck medallion from Wimmera Trophies and Gifts.
