Executive Officer – Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly
About the Role
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to lead a passionate, community-driven organisation and shape the future of sport and active recreation across the Wimmera region.
As Executive Officer, you will lead the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly through its next phase of growth and sustainability, guided by the Strategic Plan 2025–2028. Reporting to the Board of Management, you will drive the organisation’s strategic direction, oversee financial and operational performance, and foster a high-performance culture that delivers real outcomes for Wimmera communities.
As the sole executive, your responsibilities span the full breadth of the organisation leading high-impact initiatives, building strong partnerships, and ensuring sport and active recreation remains accessible, inclusive, and thriving across the region.
About Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly
The Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly is one of nine Regional Sports Assemblies across Victoria, proudly serving the shires of Horsham, Northern Grampians, Yarriambiack, West Wimmera, and Hindmarsh. Our small team of four works every day to build strength and sustainability in local sporting clubs, advocate for inclusive environments, and support Wimmera residents to live active and healthy lives.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the organisation as a values-driven, high-performing EO reporting to the Board of Management;
- Develop and implement strategic and operational plans aligned with community needs and funding obligations;
- Drive advocacy efforts with government bodies and sector stakeholders to secure resources and influence policy;
- Build and sustain partnerships across government, sport and recreation bodies, and community organisations;
- Oversee budgeting, financial reporting, and resource allocation to ensure long-term sustainability;
- Lead and develop a small, dedicated team to deliver meaningful community outcomes; and
- Champion the WRSA’s visibility and reputation through communication, marketing, and digital engagement.
About you
You are a strategic and community-focused leader who thrives in a collaborative environment. You bring:
- Proven leadership experience in a community, sport, recreation, or not-for-profit setting;
- Strong stakeholder engagement and partnership-building skills across government and community;
- Highly developed communication and advocacy capabilities;
- Sound financial management and governance experience;
- A genuine understanding of volunteer-led sporting organisations and regional community dynamics; and
- A tertiary qualification in Business, Sports Management, Community Development, Health Promotion or a related field — or extensive senior leadership experience in community sport, recreation, or the not-for-profit sector.
Selection Criteria
- Tertiary qualifications in Business Management, Health Promotion, Community Development, Sports Management, Sport and Recreation or a related field are desirable. Candidates with lesser formal qualification but extensive senior leadership experience in community sport, recreation, or the not-for-profit sector.
- Demonstrated understanding of community sporting organisations, including club structures, volunteer workforce dynamics, and the challenges of volunteer-led environments.
- Strong financial management capability, including budget development and resource allocation to support organisational sustainability.
- Proven ability to lead and implement organisational strategy, with a strong understanding of business management and community-focused service delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to build and sustain effective relationships with government, sport and recreation bodies, and community organisations.
- Highly developed communication and marketing skills, with the ability to influence, advocate and enhance organisational visibility and reputation.
- Experience in governance, policy development and risk management, with an understanding of compliance responsibilities.
