On Wednesday 15 October, the Wimmera Whippets turned their final training night of the season into a celebration of sport for all, as they took on a welcoming opponent the “Yabbies,” a mixed-team made up of WRSA staff, board members and carers. The night was full of smiles, teamwork and laughter as everyone came together to celebrate another great year of all-abilities sport.
The Whippets, an all-abilities football and netball club run by WRSA which competes in the FIDA Western Conference and the Regional All Abilities Netball League, deliver structured sport within an inclusive environment, which gives people with disabilities a chance to enjoy regular competition and be part of a team aiming to make the game inclusive and fun for everyone.
The Whippets vs Yabbies game was played in two halves. The Yabbies started strong and led after the first half, but the Whippets fought back to win 10–8. The score didn’t really matter though the best part was the laughter, cheering, and seeing everyone enjoy the game together.
The game was also a reminder of how important all-abilities sport is for the Wimmera. It helps people build confidence, make friends and stay active in a safe and supportive space. The Whippets have built a strong community around their team, showing that sport can be about fun and inclusion, not just competition.
WRSA would like to thank all players, carers, volunteers and supporters who helped make the game a success. The organisation will continue to support inclusive programs and create more opportunities for people of all abilities to enjoy sport across the region.
