What is Set The Standard?
Set The Standard is VicHealth’s new campaign to prevent and reduce racism in community sport by supporting coaches and club leaders with practical tools, training and resources to create culturally safe, welcoming clubs.
You can support Set The Standard by:
- Visiting the campaign website: setthestandard.vic.gov.au
- Using the Reflection Tool: a short self-assessment to identify strengths and next steps
- Using the Club Checklist: a practical assessment for committees and club leaders
- Joining the mailing list: receive micro-learning, updates and new resources
- Signing up for free anti-racism training*
- Signing the club pledge: demonstrate commitment to learning and improving, and feature your logo on the Set The Standard website
- Spreading the word: share campaign materials through newsletters, social media, websites and member communications
*Training available for eligible affiliated clubs
Is this campaign saying clubs are racist?
No. Set The Standard recognises that many clubs want to be inclusive and welcoming. The campaign exists because leaders told us they want more practical support and confidence to respond in the moment and build stronger club culture over time
Why focus on club leaders?
Club leaders set the tone and expectations across the club. They influence policies, behaviours, traditions and decision-making — shaping whether clubs create culturally safe environments for players, families and volunteers
How common is racism in community sport?
Racism in community sport is common and often subtle. In 2024, 56% of surveyed participants experienced or witnessed racism, most commonly through exclusion, “banter,” stereotypes or silence. Some people reduce or stop participating afterward.
