Grampians Giants claim first ever FIDA Western Conference premiership

The Grampians Giants Football Club claimed their first ever FIDA Western Conference premiership at Horsham City Oval on Sunday, sealing it in emphatic style against South Warrnambool Football Club in the 2026 Grand Final.

In soggy conditions, the Giants got the jump on South Warrnambool with 4 first-quarter goals and were able to control the game from then on, running out winners 13.11 – 89 to 1.5 – 11.

For the Giants it capped off an unbeaten season in the Football Integration Development Association’s Western Conference, and their first premiership since joining the competition in 2015. The competition this year was competed in by 4 clubs – the Giants, the Wimmera Whippets FNC, South Warrnambool FC, and Koroit FC.

Earlier in the day, the Whippets held off a fast-finishing Koroit to claim a 33-point win in cold and wet conditions in the grand final curtain-raiser.

Run directly by the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly (WRSA), the Wimmera Whippets Football Netball Club and the Grampians Giants Football Club are all-abilities football teams, proudly competing in the FIDA Western Conference. The Whippets also compete in the Regional All Abilities Netball League.

The WRSA’s Program Manager Matt Jolly said “It was a great day of football despite the wet conditions, and as usual the games were played in a great spirit.”

“Our thanks go to all our coaches and support staff, scorers and timekeepers, Wimmera Mallee Umpires Association, our valued sponsors, Horsham Demons FNC, Horsham Rural City Council, and Horsham East Rotary Club for their assistance in running another successful day.”

The Wimmera Whippets netballers season continues this Sunday.

Players interested in joining the Whippets or Giants in 2027 are encouraged to visit wrsa.org.au or fida.org.au for more information, or call the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly on 0439 530 536.
