Connecting Sport Leaders Across the Wimmera

25 Jul 2025

This week, Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly hosted the first meeting of a regional network of sport development officers, bringing together representatives from state sporting bodies and community sport.

This is a concept we’ve been passionate about for some time. Community sport in rural and regional areas is about much more than competition. It plays a vital role in building health, belonging, identity, and stronger, more liveable communities.

The professionals in this space often operate as the final paid tier of the sport system, balancing strategic planning, on-the-ground delivery, and critical support for volunteers. The work is broad, demanding, and often isolated.

Our first online meeting provided an opportunity to connect, share experiences, and learn more about each other’s work. While each attendee came from a different sport or local context, the discussion highlighted many shared challenges, particularly around volunteerism and long-term sustainability.

Despite these challenges, what emerged clearly was the deep energy and commitment of those working in this space. There is real strength in bringing people together, and WRSA is proud to support this network as it grows.

We thank the many organisations who were part of this important first conversation and look forward to continuing the journey together.
