PRESS RELEASE – December 2, 2016

HAWKER SPORTS STAR NOMINEE FOR NOVEMBER

Kaniva shooter Zoe Hawker is the sports star nominee winner for November.

Hawker won her nomination after making the top six Victorian State Women’s Postal team at the State Clay Target Championships the youngest ever to claim that achievement.

The achievement was made all the more commendable as Hawker is only 14 years of age and was shooting against competitors that had been Australian representatives at some stage of their careers.

Hawker shot well enough to take out the “B” grade High Gun, which was also against male competitors over the three days of the championships winning handicap, double rise, single barrel, double barrel and points score with an overall score of 319 out of 350.

The talented athlete also has had a great year winning gold at the New Zealand National Championships in point score and bronze in singles and mini’s.

Hawker is following in the footsteps of her parents Lisa and Wayne who have both represented Australia in shooting in recent years. Hawker started the year shooting in “C” grade and has improved enough to now be shooting in the “A” grade.

Hawker now joins volleyballers Cleo Baker and Laelah Robertson, ten pin bowler Sophie Martin, All Abilities Athletes Bianca Lauricella, Matt Taylor, Alfred Muller and Josh Barry, Horsham Motorcycle Club’s Corey Watts, Horsham Saints netballer Maggie Caris, Horsham Panthers rugby player Jayden Gascoyne, athlete Jesse Iese, water skier Peter Smith and basketballer Jordie McAuliffe as the nominees for the annual awards, with all in line to collect the Horsham Sports and Community Club Title of Wimmera Sports Star of the Year as well as the $1,000 Sports Star scholarship, at a gala dinner in February next year and follow in the footsteps of previous winners including Darcy Tucker, Jannik Blair, Ken Bald, Alethea Sedgman and Mark O’Brien.

Nominations for the Horsham Sports and Community Club Sports Star of the Year Award close the last day of each month.

If you know of someone who is doing well at their sport and deserves some recognition, why not nominate them in the Sports Star of the Month.  All nominees in the monthly award will be presented with certificates signed by the Minister for Sport and Recreation John Eren and the monthly winner receives a free ticket to the annual presentation and a specially struck medallion from Wimmera Trophies and Gifts.
