JOINT WINNERS SPORTS STAR NOMINEE FOR OCTOBER

Two Murtoa volleyballers are the joint nominees for October in the Sports Star of the Year awards.

Murtoa College students Cleo Baker and Laelah Robertson won their nominations after being part of the silver medal winning Victorian Gold team at the National Junior Volleyball Championships held on the Gold Coast.

Both girls have been playing for two years and came through the Murtoa College volleyball program, progressing into the Volleyball Horsham Academy Program and ultimately making the Victorian Gold team, which is made up of athletes from Western Victoria.

Both girls have been Junior MVP’s since they have been playing and most consistent team members and they have embraced the opportunities afforded to them to get them to this level.

To top off a successful month both girls were members of the Vic Gold winning team at the recent Horsham tournament and team members in the Murtoa 7’s team that won the Volleyball Horsham Winter Season Junior B competition.

Baker and Robertson join ten pin bowler Sophie Martin, All Abilities Athletes Bianca Lauricella, Matt Taylor, Alfred Muller and Josh Barry, Horsham Motorcycle Club’s Corey Watts, Horsham Saints netballer Maggie Caris, Horsham Panthers rugby player Jayden Gascoyne, athlete Jesse Iese, water skier Peter Smith and basketballer Jordie McAuliffe as the nominees for the annual awards, with all in line to collect the Horsham Sports and Community Club Title of Wimmera Sports Star of the Year as well as the $1,000 Sports Star scholarship, at a gala dinner in February next year and follow in the footsteps of previous winners including Darcy Tucker, Jannik Blair, Ken Bald, Alethea Sedgman and Mark O’Brien.

Nominations for the Horsham Sports and Community Club Sports Star of the Year Award close the last day of each month.

If you know of someone who is doing well at their sport and deserves some recognition, why not nominate them in the Sports Star of the Month.  All nominees in the monthly award will be presented with certificates signed by the Minister for Sport and Recreation John Eren and the monthly winner receives a free ticket to the annual presentation and a specially struck medallion from Wimmera Trophies and Gifts.
